How Schools can help

Schools can help or hinder your opportunities to ride into work, the benefits outweigh the barriers so we hope schools will do all they can to help you and your colleagues.

Not all cyclists wear lycra

There are lots of reasons why adults in education should/could benefit from riding to work, but unfortunately there are also lots of barriers meaning we don’t do so often enough, or are unable to too. We’ve spoken previously about the benefits of cycling to work; by supporting teachers’ wellbeing and holistic mental/physical growth outside of school leading to healthier and happier teachers who are more likely to contribute positively to the school community, and now we are looking at what employers and employees can do to help reduce those barriers.

Facilities

  • Safe bike shed

  • Separate adult showers

  • Separate adult changing rooms

  • Areas to store kit/clothes

Opportunities

  • Cycle to work schemes

  • Starting a lunch time cycling club

  • Meet and ride together (#frideday could be a great way to start this off)

  • Reducing teacher workload and marking so staff don’t have to carry it home

Inspiration

  • Being role models to other adults and students by showing the possibilities of cycling to work

  • Passing on cycling skills via skill shares, kit swaps

  • Normalising using bicycles as transport and for utilitarian reasons in all seasons

Can you get more adults working in education cycling into work? Do you have something that your school or place of work does that you think everyone should know about? Spread the word of our community to help us get more members onboard and get in touch via teachercyclingcommunity@gmail.com
