- what’s your current teaching position/subject:
Secondary Teacher, Art.
- what’s your current focus in education?
Raising attainment of high achievers at KS4. Essentially thinking about how to increase the percentage of grades 7, 8 and 9 via interventions.
- how does riding help you?
It sounds a bit dramatic, but I’m sure it makes me a better person. I feel happier from riding even if I was umming and ahing about going out.
- why did you apply to be an ambassador/what would you like to do as an ambassador?
I applied as I’ve really enjoyed the rides and events I’ve been involved in previously, getting to help promote that for others is exciting. I’d like to organise some rides and help more people get involved.
- what do you think is special about TCC?
It connects teachers who share an interest. I like how there are so many different people knowing cycling in vastly different ways.
- what are your current bike(s) and dream bike:I currently have a Factor Ostro VAM, a BMC Teammachine SLR01 as an indoor training bike and a Trek Checkpoint SL7. As for a dream bike I’m quite lucky with what I have, I’d probably get a winter bike that actually stops.
- what’s your best cycling achievement or memory?
I like any ride where you stop and people are surprised you got there on a bike. The Flanders sportive was good, but I felt awful. I have fond memories of cycling round France (not the entirety of it) with my dad when I was a boy.
- what’s your best teaching achievement or memory?
We’ve had a lot of students go on to study Art based subjects beyond KS5.
Arts not for everyone, but for the ones who it is, it can be everything, being able to be the person that helps them is a lovely feeling.
Plus it’s a lot like playing around, I get paid to help people draw mythical creatures, print and come up with weird ideas.
- do you have a golden tip for teaching and/or cycling?
Teaching - No one cares that it took you 3 hours to make a PowerPoint. Worry about something else.
Cycling - Probably don’t take advice off of a rando on the internet. But if you must, don’t sacrifice style for speed.
